Seven Fitness Tips: Improving the Quality of Life

Physical fitness refers to the human body’s ability to function without too much fatigue. Thus the energy stored is enough to do leisure activities as well as overcome physical stresses with alertness and vigor. General alertness, muscular endurance and strength, and cardio vascular reliability are the obvious signs that you are physically fit.

Normally, physical fitness is measured according to expected functions of the body associated with endurance, strength, coordination, flexibility, and agility. Moreover, stress testing also ascertains the accommodation of the body to a sustained, powerful stimuli used in analyzing fitness.

The physical fitness levels are influenced by systematic, regular exercise. Moderate activities keep the person at a certain level enough to deal with ordinary stress. Improving the levels of fitness needs more intensive exercises which promotes changes and challenge physiological systems.

There are seven fitness tips that can help you improve the quality of your life.

1.	Daily exercise. Every day perform some movements that can elevate the rate of your heart. It can simply include walking when buying things in the market nearby. Doing household chores like washing clothes, mowing lawns, and other chores may be done also.

2.	Eat more veggies. Vegetables and fruits will keep you energized and healthy. Plants in its natural state contain lots of fibers and nutrients. Organic fruits and vegetables must be preferred if possible since it is free from any chemical contamination.

3.	Weight train. Muscles are weakened as you age. Do resistance training to create hypertrophy. This helps you look younger and adds more quality into your life.

4.	Circuit train. A form of weight training which enables you to continually move from one workout to another. Following this practice can improve your heart rate during the whole workout doubling your cardio session.

5.	Train functionally. Incorporate some movements into your daily exercise which benefit or mimic your practiced movements in the actual world. Sports are good for functional training because the body is required to move in an efficient way. Functional training can keep your body balanced making it more resistant to illnesses and injuries.

6.	Stretching your body as you warm up. Muscle contraction is achieved through resistance training making it tighter and smaller. Similar to all types of cardio, simple resistance training is also great. Warming up the body through stretching is helpful after exercises.

7.	Hydrate. There are about more than 60% of water in the human body. However, more often you became under hydrated because of some common beverages causing dehydration. It includes coffee, soda, alcohol, and tea. As much as possible drink a lot of water following the required eight glasses of water a day.

These are simple strategies to keep your body fit. But more people have failed to achieve it because they are telling themselves they cannot do any exercise because of their family and job. Never forget that you can stop from working if you get sick. Likewise, if you are dead, you can never be with your family. So, it is your decision to put exercise first on your priorities. After all, those people dependent on you are more important.

I am 53 and my blood pressure before taking Heart Care by Nature’s Way was usually around 140-160/85-95. High Blood Pressure also runs in my family although we are all extremely thin and eat a diet heavy in fish, rice and veggies (I’m asian).

My grandfather died from complications from untreated high blood pressure (he died from kidney failure resulting from HBP). Both my parents are on medications for their high blood pressure and I really want to avoid that if I can.

I exercise, eat right and my blood pressure was still high! (and I have a stressful job). I started taking Nature’s Way Heart Care 2x a day (pills are small and easy to swallow)with meals, about 3 months ago and it took a couple of months for me to see any consistent effect but my blood pressure (even with my still stressful job) is now consistently 120-130/70-80 which is normal range.

I am thrilled! This stuff really works!

Tips Associated to Diet and Fitness for Keeping Your Body {health}

One of the most complicated things to do is getting started with a valuable project such as attaining a healthy body. This is often the basic nature of humans. There is always a tendency to set aside important things today and instead prefer to do it some other day.

To become successful in such undertakings, you need to set goals that are more realistic. It is easy to follow besides minimizing your pressure. For example, losing forty pounds as well as keeping it as realistic as possible to become an attainable goal. But never fear because there are several tips that can integrate your mind, body, and spirit to stay in the right track.

1.	Follow a {health}y nutrition and diet. Experts on {health} care advise people to provide their body with quality fuel to function properly. Eat food that are healthy, high in important nutrients, and free from chemicals. Also take vitamin and herbal supplements to support good health.

2.	Get enough rest. If possible, get the right amount of sleep without interruptions for engaging your REM (rapid eye movement) patterns. This is the way of your nervous system to heal and refuel your body. If you feel overly sluggish, then rest, sits, or takes a nap shortly. You must report sluggishness and chronic sleep problems to your doctor. You cannot do your exercises properly if you are in this situation.

3.	Keep your concentration at the present. Avoid feelings of worry or regret because you failed your fitness goals in the past. It can stress out your body. Instead appreciate the gifts that are offered to you at this moment. Continue what you have started and stick to it this time.

4.	Do your exercise. Your body should stay in movement and action. Burn your excess fat and calories. Mental stimulation and exercise can be incorporated to keep you mind sharp and sound. Challenge your mind to grow, expand, learn, explore, decipher, and experience. You can do meditations as well. It can reduce your stress and heart rate, keep you at present, and maximize your feelings of joy, serenity, spiritual faith, and peace to stay fit.

5.	Keep yourself surrounded by a good support system like your family and friends. Achieving your diet and fitness goals will be easier if there are people who care, love, appreciate, and support you.

6.	Laugh often. Some studies revealed that laughing is significant in keeping people healthy and to heal a sick body.

7.	Your thoughts should always stay positive to look and feel great. Closely monitor your thoughts to ensure that only positive things are stored there. Reverse negative thoughts into positive thoughts.

8.	Learn to handle your emotions. Stifled emotions can affect your life. It also causes poor appetite. Your emotional energy should also stay positive. You cannot achieve the best fitness results as well as maintain your diet.

Follow these tips properly to ensure a happier and longer life. It is not too late to set your goal to meet your fitness needs.

Devote Yourself to Lifetime Fitness

The healthier you are. The more productive you become.

A healthy person may live a longer life. And, enjoy its whole span with a healthy body and mind.

A truly healthy man must learn to balance physical, mental, emotional, spiritual & mind health. A healthy man goes beyond to understand & fulfill personal, family, national , global and cosmic responbilities

Start with these tips to enjoy a fuller healthy body & mind.

This healthiness can be achieved thorough a consistent fitness exercise. For you to secure an unfailing health, you must commit to fitness for your lifetime. This is not an exaggeration.

A lifetime commitment on fitness will make you safe from the miserable feeling of obesity. Dr. David Satcher, formerly a general surgeon, identified that the excess weight of the body is epidemic.

He stated that this type of epidemic caused the deaths of almost 300,000 people yearly. In fact, excessive body weight becomes the secondary cause of death in America.

Most physicians never fail to remind their patients, as well as the whole public that physical fitness is the primary cure to avoid these threatening diseases. But why is it that more and more people have become unhealthy?

The fact that excessive body weight can harm a person’s health is not anymore news, for it is a fact that has long been existing. This is neither history, because it is not yet resolved.

Instead, this existing truth is a problem that worsens through time. The health problems mark a dramatic increase. One of its causes is the lack of physical fitness.

The system of the contemporary society requires more of human effort and time. Fast moves, rush paces, almost every adult is always in a hurry. That they don’t find some time for conducting a physical exercise.

People tend to ignore the most vital ingredient of a daily routine, exercise. And the problem was worsened by technology.

Nowadays, you can climb staircases with stationary feet, escalators and elevators are everywhere. You never mind to stand up from your chair to take your files from other table for you can just easily move your swivel chair.

So, where else will you place fitness?

Fitness is a thing that needs not to be taken for granted. Everything now is instant, food especially. Certainly, you don’t want an instant life too. Then, a lifetime commitment on fitness is your key to lengthen your life.

Engage yourself to fitness exercises, and make it as a part of your life. Always think that it is an important meal that you should not miss in a day.

If you are truly busy, you can opt for a 24 hours fitness center. The service there will always be compatible to your schedule, undoubtedly.

Consider this; you are doing your best to cope up with time. You work to earn for a living, to support your family and enjoy life as well.

But think, will you really be able to use and enjoy your investments when your health has already deteriorated?

So, you must invest in good health too. And that is through a lifetime commitment on physical fitness.

The Benefits Of Yoga For Men

“Yoga is for women only”, “Men who take yoga are those who are not into manly sports”, “I would be the only guy in there”, or “What can yoga do for a big guy like me?”

These statements and questions are very common but they are all untrue. Yoga can benefit everyone of every build and lifestyle. There are certain positions that can work together with other muscle groups to provide optimum flexibility and strength.

To Start With

Yoga is not only a practice but also a lifestyle in its native Indian culture. There are many levels that are practiced both physically and mentally, some that strive even for immortality. The Western culture has taken certain aspects of yoga and developed practices that are more on the physical level. The physical benefits may include:

Increase in flexibility: Yoga positions engage the various joints of the body, including those that are not engaged in regular exercise and strength training routines. However, full mobility and range of motion relies on the engagement of all of these. In addition, yoga increases lubrication of these joints and the supporting ligaments and tendons. This natural lubrication helps to prevent injury. Moreover these flexibility benefits are immediately enjoyed; the joints and parts of the body that are worked during regular exercise help those during the practice of yoga. Essentially each practice works in tandem to achieve the greatest level of flexibility.
Massage and stimulation of bodily organs: It may sound strange but the organs of the body do benefit from internal massage, much in the way that the muscles of the body benefit from external massage. While most people think that the organs are simply there to perform their duty and do not need any outside manipulation, yoga does improve organ health and function by massaging all the organs internally; this aides in the fight against disease and also helps forewarn of disease.
Awareness : Yoga taps into a level of awareness that is not known by the average person. Yoga gives the practitioner a new level of understanding of their whole body. This allows them to become a true advocate for themselves and know better (and sooner) if something is wrong.
Complete Detoxification: Massage, stimulation, and stretching of muscles, joints, and organs results in a significant increase in circulation and blood supply. This allows the body to flush out toxins that accumulate in the body (from foods, medications, and other environmental pollutants both organic and chemical). This prevents such problems as premature aging, lack of energy, and disease while helping to realize a new-found zest for life.
Toning: Yoga is an excellent source of toning for all muscle groups. Yoga stimulates muscles to tone and rebuild and strengthen.

What Else Can It Offer?

Yoga has the ability to help anyone (men in this case) build strength and flexibility. Even for the guy who plays other sports there are certain yoga poses that will help reduce muscle imbalance. Certain sports use some muscles more then others. Yoga can help the ignored muscles build strong to correct the imbalance. The tightness and pain from the imbalance will go away if yoga is practiced on a daily basis.

The versatility of yoga is another benefit for men. There is no special equipment that one has to buy to practice yoga; you can practice in unusual environments, and it is easy to practice. Since yoga involves the whole body then men will feel great all over, every day. In addition yoga practices aide and assist with other physical activities and cardio workouts.

Not Only Physical Benefits

Many men concentrate solely on their physical being and ignore the mental. However, the mind and body work together and yoga will help tap into that awareness. Some of the mental benefits may include:

Alertness: Yoga increases the body`s awareness. If we are intoned with our body then we will be able to tell if something is not right.
Relief : This practice helps release stress patterns and muscle strain, which will help refresh the body.
Relaxation: Yoga helps relax the mind and body which will, in turn, sharpen concentration.

How Does One Start?

You now have a better understanding of what yoga encompasses. You have decided that it is not just for women or older people and that it can truly add to your workout. Where does a guy sign up? Well, if you are a member at a gym, then this is a great place to start. Many facilities have classes available or if they do not have menâ??s only then raise enough interest and have them start one.

It is best to do your research before adding an aspect of therapy to your lifestyle. No matter your physical capabilities it is a good idea to contact your physician or trainer and discuss your newfound desire to add yoga to your life.

Japanese Energy Healing: Its Roots and Modern Usage

The Japanese culture is known for many things, such as food that is great tasting and healthy. They are known for ancient forms of marital arts that involve several aspects of breathing, stretching, meditation, and discipline.
Discipline is a key point when discovering the mysteries of Japanese Energy Healing.

Japanese Medicine is comprised of a variety of forms that help heal and maintain balance in life. Balance is key and when something interrupts that balance then problems arise. Balance is not just on the physical level but also incorporates mental, emotional, and social aspects. The Japanese look at the whole self when trying to achieve complete wellness. Japanese medicine has been lumped in with the ancient forms of Chinese medicine. This is explained because of the similarities of the cultures, their beliefs, and their forms of wellness.

There are several forms of Japanese Energy healing and each deals with the aspects similar to that of Qigong. The therapies of Qigong accumulate, circulate, and work with Qi (pronounced chi). Qi is the energy within the body. Sometimes Qi is only associated with deep breathing, but there is more to it. The higher levels or the more evolved forms of Qi are used to focus on particular energy centers in and around the body.

The qi part of qigong means breathe in Chinese and can even be extended to mean life force. Gong means work applied to a discipline. This term was coined in the twentieth-century with the desire to separate cultivation from superstition. Also, to preserve the valuable aspects of traditional Chinese practices.

Reiki For Instance

One practice that has gained popularity in the Western hemisphere is that of the healing practice of Reiki. The word Reiki comes from the Japanese words “Rei” (spiritual) and “ki” (energy). The word translates to mean “spiritual life force.” The Usui system of healing (Reiki) uses the flow of energy from practitioner to patient to enhance the bodyâ??s natural capabilities of healing by balancing energy. Reiki incorporates elements of all the other alternative healing practices including spiritual healing, auras, crystals, charka balancing, meditation, aromatherapy, and more. Reiki or Usui utilizes specific techniques to restore and balance the natural energy source within the body. This is a hands-on holistic treatment that truly touches on all levels of the body, mind, and spirit.

Reiki History

According to Reiki history the story goes that in the 1920â??s a Japanese Buddhist Monk by the name of Dr. Mikao Usui ended a retreat of fasting meditation with the healing powers of touch. Usui had a strong background in kiko (energy cultivation) and a martial art that had a strong resemblance to Zen. He also studied Zen. The Reiki system incorporates all of these influences. He unified all of his learning into the practical form of Reiki. In 1936, a woman named Hawayo Takata brought this practice to the Western hemisphere via Hawaii. It has been taught and performed ever since.

Who Benefits From Reiki?

It is a misconception that only the ill can benefit from Reiki treatments. This has probably seemed to be the way because you hear of the benefits for patients, such as patients fighting Cancer. When someone undergoes traditional medical treatments to help fight this horrible disease, they are pumped full of chemicals and radiation to help kill the bad cells. The treatment causes the patient to also lose their inner energyâ??energy that is needed for natural healing. Reiki treatments restore the patients’ ability to heal (during both natural healing and modern treatments) by transferring positive energy and targeting those areas so that the negativity is blocked and the positive energy can help the patient heal.

Some patients tell of relaxation and comfort felt during the treatments; other reports include a sensation of heat or tingling from the practitionerâ??s hands. There is no typical treatment and so no one answer or description. Some people may need multiple treatments before the benefit is felt.

The Japanese culture has much to teach us about alternative healing and medicine. The use of herbs to heal and maintain our physical health, martial arts to create a sense of balance, and their forms of energy healing such as Reiki. Hopefully, the public will not only research this way of life but start adopting the principles that encompass it. This would reduce the stress and bring back the sense of complete wellness that many of us have been missing.

Yoga For Children – It’s Not Just For Adults

Why would someone consider paying someone to help their child get exercise? Once upon a time, exercise was the same word used for playing. Children would open their door, head outside and would not show up until dinner time. Games would be played with other children that would involve running, jumping, laughing, and even positive conflict.

However, the world is a different place. It is now filled with fear, anxieties, and other forms of stress. Terms like ADD and ADHD have become standard when describing children. Obesity has risen in children causing an onslaught of childhood disease and general unhealthiness. What is the answer to it all? Perhaps yoga could be the right path for your child.

What Is Yoga?

Many people have their own ideas of what yoga is and all that it involves.
Yoga is a group of Indian spiritual practices that aims at achieving the union with the Supreme Consciousness. There are some yogas that go beyond that and aim at the spiritual transformation of the human nature and obtaining immortality. The Western Hemisphere embraces the physical aspects together with the practice of asanas more than anything (asanas are postures of Hatha Yoga). This is often used as a form of exercise that is good for the body but easy on its joints.

Why Choose Yoga?

What could yoga do for a person? How could they benefit? Well, at its physical level, yoga has been proven extremely beneficial for certain disorders. Further reasons to try this form of alternative health therapy would be:

Increasing Flexibility – yoga acts on many of the joints of the body. It goes beyond the norm to include those that are not commonly exercised but need to be for achieve full mobility
- Increasing lubrication of the joints, ligaments, and tendons. The positions practiced also work the ligaments and tendons that help release the necessary lubrication to prevent injury. Natural lubrication is essential to joint and body health and an increase in it is even more beneficial, particularly for a sedentary society of children

Organ health - Yoga massages all the organs and stimulates a strong circulatory systems and ample blood supply. These help fight against disease.
Awareness – Yoga gives children of all ages an introduction to self-awareness and awareness of the self in relation to the earth and to others.
â?¢ Complete Detoxification â?? Multitudinous toxins can accumulate in even the very young. These come from all manner of dietary, medicinal, and environmental pollutants and substances. The increase in circulation and ample blood supplied by yoga practice enhances the detoxification and excretion process, making for healthier, toxin-free children who have more energy and feel better.
Toning – Yoga is an excellent source of toning for young muscle groups. It works to build muscles, strengthen, and enhance flexibility as it works to correct the problems of inactivity

Is Yoga Really For Children?

The benefits mentioned are for everyone who incorporates yoga into their lives. There are benefits that are specifically designed for children. Some of these benefits include:

Self-control – The simple breathing and biofeedback techniques that are used slow the nervous system allowing children to develop a sense of self-control and allowing them to connect with their feelings.

Concentration – The poses and sequences used help release physical and emotional energy that help children concentrate and helps them test better in the learning atmosphere
Skills The games and tools used help develop trust, compassion, communication, and teamwork skills

Relaxation – Storytelling, mental imagery, and music help promote a sense of calmness that allows the imagination to flow
Wellness – Lessons learned help develop healthy habits around food, exercise, electronic media, and other choices that can affect decisions

When it comes to the children, one should take all aspects into consideration. The children are truly our future and their overall happiness matters for the proper balance of health. When a child is sick then the parent will take them to the doctor, have the necessary prescriptions filled, and follow the doctorâ??s orders. However, overall health is not just about avoiding illness but the fine balance of physical, mental, social, and emotional wellness, such that yoga can provide.

Staple Natural Healing Herbs

The words “natural healing herbs” sound like a hip new saying. It is everywhere in the media and if you know your herbs then you are “it.” Well, it is not as easy as it sounds. There are so many herbs to choose from and each has its own healing capability. There are herbs that are regional and those that are imported. Some come in forms of teas while others have been compounded to a simple pill form that you can take with your morning orange juice. Some herbs are for topical use only, which means you rub it on the area of pain and some herbs add benefits in your cooking. Where do you begin?

There are many forms of educated materials to choose from and your own physician may even have some advice from which you can benefit from. Here are a few that are consistently relied upon and are doable for the average person who has little time to take a class on herbs.

The Power Of Curry

Curry, which is used in many Thai recipes, contains turmeric which in turn contains curcumin. This has been known to help reduce swelling in arthritis patients. When the swelling is reduced then so is the pain.

When curcumin is combined with a small amount of quercetin (an antioxidant found in onions, apples, and cabbage), then the benefit can be a reduction in colon polyps. Polyps are the precancerous lesions found on the colon. If the polyps are reduced then the likelihood of cancer is too.

Cinnamon, It`s Not Just Good For Your Oatmeal

Cinnamon has been used for flavoring such treats like cookies, oatmeal and toast but it has been proven that the benefits are greater than your taste buds. Cinnamon extract, when taken daily, reduces your blood sugar. If you are a victim of type 2 diabetes, then cinnamon can be your true friend. Not only does it reduce your blood sugar, but it also reduces related heart risks. One study has shown that cinnamon reduces your cholesterol and your triglycerides. Having this spice in your cabinet and using its water soluble extract in your daily regimen will be like having your own coach in your corner of the daily fight of diabetes.

Rosemary Vs. HCAs

Rosemary is found in many herb gardens and adds a pleasant smell to your garden and your home. Many use it to flavor their chicken before roasting it. These are great uses of this herb, however consider its more health-impacting capabilities; mainly, reducing HCA’s (heterocyclic amines).

HCA’s are the potent carcinogens that cause many cancers. HCA’s can be formed when meat is fried, broiled, or grilled at high temperatures. When rosemary was added to beef before cooking, these toxic levels were reduced.

Rosemary may also reduce tumors. The extract helps prevent the carcinogens binding with the DNA which would cause tumors and many studies are underway seeing if the extract will reduce tumors that have already been formed.

Ginger – Mom’s Favorite Remedy

It is no wive’s tale that ginger ale helps when you have a bellyache. It has been tested and found that time after time the ginger helps ease the nausea in pregnancy, motion sickness, and general stomach upset. Ginger is a powerful antioxidant that blocks the chemical that your brain produces when experiencing stomach upset and stops the production of free radicals, which is another cause of stomach sickness.

But wait, thereâ??s more. Ginger also regulates blood flow which will help lower blood pressure. It also has many anti-inflammatory properties that might help with arthritis pain. There have been studies that prove that gingerâ??s anti-inflammatory power also killed ovarian cancer cells. This could be a great herbal supplement for many different patients.

Pesto And Stress Relief

Holy Basil is not an expression used when seeing copious amounts of basil in oneâ??s herb garden but it is a special type of basil that has wonderful effects on stress. Teas made with this basil wonder have helped relieve indigestion and headaches. Both of which are symptoms of stress and stress related disorders.

Worry Free With St. John’s Wort

It has been proven time after time that St. John`s Wort has helped many patients with mild depression without major side effects. This relaxing drug also helps increase the body`s melatonin which increases your natural sleep pattern. You should have sweet dreams and worry less with this herbal remedy.

Garlic May Leave You With Interesting Breath, But It’s Worth It

Using a high consumption of aged garlic extract has lowered rates of several cancers, including ovarian and colorectal. Many people have reported a reduced number of polyps when taking this herb for over a year. This potent herb contains many phytochemicals that decrease high blood pressure by many points and it helps prevent strokes.

Adding any one of these herbs may increase your quality of life and help prevent future troubles. Doing a little homework to find out which ones would benefit you would truly be worth the time.

Healing Properties Of Most Used Natural Health Herbs

Herbal medicine and natural health herbs have been used for centuries. Many are still used for the same ailments they once were and some have been researched to cure multiple needs. Some people think that this methodology is new to the medical world but anyone who has had a mustard compress or strong bark tea from their grandmother can testify that these remedies are time honored. However, further research and information is readily available and it is truly amazing how some of these plants and herbs can be used to treat common ailments and helps reduce the risk of modern day killers, such has high blood pressure.

While some herbs can be used informally, such as cooking, teas, or in a daily supplement, there are others that require a trained specialist to distribute or else these herbs can be harmful. Many herbalists grow their own herbs so they can insure the quality and the lack of pesticides used.

Natural Healing Herb Methodology

There are different schools of thought when it comes to herbs. Some follow the Native American traditions of herbal medicine while others follow the traditional Chinese methods. Some use a method that bridges the eastern and western types of herbalist studies. Some herbalists that are trained in both eastern and western healing and medicine have tried to deconstruct ancient medical texts to get a true understanding and apply it to modern science. The yin-yang balance comes into play with the balance of pro-oxidant and anti-oxidant properties.

Eclectic medicine bridged the European and the Native American traditions using physiomedicalism. Cherokee medicine divides herbs into foods, toxins, or medicines. They use seven plants in disease treatments which defines the spiritual and the physiological aspects of each.

In India, Vata, Pitta, or Kapha is balanced by using complex formulas that have 30 or more ingredients and many of these have undergone alchemical processing. This form of medicine is called Ayurvedic.

Modern theories of herbal combination include the triune formula. This was developed by William LeSassier. He combined the Pythagorean imagery with Chinese medicine ideas. This resulted in 9 herb formulas that drained, supplemented, or neutrally nourished the main organ systems and three associated systems.

Administration Of The Herbs

Natural health herbs are used in a variety of ways to deliver their effectiveness. Some are used topically in the form of an oil, lotion, compress, or poultice. There are certain herbs taken every day as a daily supplement pill that will help build up the bodyâ??s natural defense of certain invaders. And some come as an elixir or syrup and help heal on contact when digested. No matter the choice of herb, it is important to check with a professional to insure the proper usage and dosage of the herb. Not all Natural health herbs are good for each and every patient.

So Many Natural Herbs To Choose From

There are so many health herbs to choose from and each with its own healing properties. There are many herbs and they are classified with a scientific name and a common name. Using the common name makes more sense from a consumerâ??s point of view and can be cross referenced at any time. A few natural herbs to consider are:

â?¢ Yarrow â?? This herb needs to be ingested quickly to help with poisoning
â?¢ Garlic â?? Is used for seasoning Italian cooking but also is an antibiotic and may improve cardiovascular health
â?¢ Echinacea â?? Also known as the purple coneflower, is used to reduce the length of the common cold
â?¢ Horehound- Used historically by many grandmothers and native American women as an expectorant

Uses Of Herbs In Natural Health

Natural health is comprised of many avenues. There are supplements to take, exercises to do, special teas to drink, or breathing exercises that allow your natural flow of positive energy. One of the many forms of natural health comes from herbs. The use of herbs has been found historically, dating back to as early as records have been kept. One will see references in the Bible, history books, and in journals of medicine. Another word for herbs is botanicals which refer to herbs and plant products.

Some skeptics say that uses of herbs only are in our mind, and that they do not truly aid in the healing process. However, some of these skeptics also admit that the original foundation of some of todayâ??s medicines do come from nature. Aspirin is from the derivative of willow bark. Historically people have used teas made with willow bark to reduce fevers. Other herbal medicines were used to help treat constipation, ease pain, or act as a stimulant or a relaxant. Some recent research has shown that some herbs work just as good has the conventional medicines found at your local pharmacy.

There are many different herbs used both in past and in present. Some have been tested for their effectiveness only in animals while others have human trials to back up their claims. Some people do not pay attention to todayâ??s studies but rely on family history of use. For example, Mom always gave ginger ale for a stomach ache and Grandma swore that a strong herbal tea would knock out that fever. Some herbs have multiple medicinal uses and may be ingested in some cases and used topically in others.

Making Sense Of The Vocabulary

Herbal cures have their own set of vocabulary. Many are used to show how the herb is mixed with a compound. A few examples of vocabulary words used are:

â?¢ Tinctures â?? exact meaning is the “alcoholic extracts of herbs.” This is obtained by combining the herb with 100% ethanol alcohol, resulting in an end percentage of 40-60% ethanol once combined
â?¢ Elixirs and Herbal Wine â?? This also pertains to the alcoholic extract of the herbs. Elixirs are mixed with spirits such as vodka while herbal wine is clearly made with wine. Both types produce an ethanol percentage rate of 12-38%
â?¢ Tisanes â?? This pertains to using herbs mixed with hot water
â?¢ Decoctions â?? Boiling the herbs a long time and used with roots or bark
â?¢ Macerates â?? This occurs when herbs such as sage and thyme are infused with cold water and allowed to sit up to 10 hours

As stated above, some herbal medicines are best used topically and can cure a variety of ailments. These are called topicals and they also have their own vocabulary. A few that one may come across are:

â?¢ Essential oils- These are the herbs concentrated and many can burn or harm the skin if used directly (undiluted). It is advised to mix the essential oil with olive oil to use safely and effectively.
â?¢ Poultices â?? This is also known as a compress. It is used by taking the herb, crushing it, rehydrating with a small amount of water, and applying to the wound directly or wrapped in a bandage.

A couple of other ways that herbs are used and applied are:

â?¢ Syrups â?? These are the herb extracts that are mixed with syrups or honey. A high percentage of sugars used are greater then the equal parts of water and herb used. This is processed for three weeks.
â?¢ Inhalation â?? Used as an aromatherapy and not direct inhaling, the herbs can help in deep cleansing of the skin and tools for relaxation.

Plentiful Plants

There are many herbs and plants used in herbal natural healing. They help prevent and cure a number of ailments and some may have multiple healing qualities. There are countless derivatives of plants and herbs and to list them all would create its own dictionary. A few to think about are:

â?¢ Soy â?? This and other plants contain phytoestrogens which are plants with estrogen activity. They have benefits for symptoms of menopause.
â?¢ Echinacea â?? Strong extracts seem to limit the length and the severity of the common cold.
â?¢ Elderberry â?? Used in literary references in the form of wine but also used to speed the recovery of type A and B flu.
â?¢ Feverfew â?? Used for migraine headaches for patients that are not pregnant.
â?¢ Pawpaw â?? Can be useful for killing worms or lice
â?¢ Honey â?? Not only popular with bears but for people with high cholesterol and the need to heal some wounds.

This is just a sampling of the healing power and uses of herbs. There are many to discover and the effectiveness will differ in people just like the over the counter medicines that are offered to us today.
